Birth control is the act of preventing pregnancy. Birth control can also assist with irregular periods, PCOS, endometriosis, acne, menstrual cramps, and low estrogen conditions. At Women’s Health Specialists of Frederick, our providers will provide you information to assist you in determining which method is best for your needs.
What types of birth control are available?
While there are different types of barrier contraceptive methods, such as condoms and spermicides, diaphragms and cervical caps, there are other options for women to consider:
- Hormonal methods that include different birth control pill options, the patch and NuvaRing
- Sterilization; such as vasectomy, fallopian tube removal, or tubal ligation
- Intrauterine devices that release hormones
Different IUDs we recommend:
- Nexplanon
- Lilleta
- Mirena
- Kyleena
- Skyla
- Paraguard
Condoms, both female and male, are the only birth control method (aside from abstinence) that protect you against sexually transmitted infections.
IUDs, or intrauterine devices, are more than 99% effective in preventing pregnancy, making them an effective choice. They also protect you for three or more years, depending on the type of IUD you choose, but are easily reversible with removal. Nexplanon®, a small, thin hormonal implant placed in the arm provides up to three years of continuous birth control and is 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.
The various types of birth control pill are about 91% effective in preventing pregnancy, but do require you to remember to take one every day – so user error can interfere with their effectiveness.
Barrier methods are less effective at preventing pregnancy, with the diaphragm being 88% effective and condoms being 79-82% effective.
